The Steinmetz Ph. Bach created in the then independent city Bockenheim on behalf of the Veterans' Association Bockenheim a warrior memorial in the form of an obelisk of red Main sandstone on a pedestal with a sculpted midsection, its individual parts over time were often damaged or destroyed. The inscription on the war memorial quoted below has only partially survived:

meaning

The three soldiers mentioned were members of the 1st Nassau Infantry Regiment No. 87 , stationed in Mainz, and Regiment No. 82. The former formed the 41st Infantry Brigade in the federal fortress together with the 2nd Nassau Infantry Regiment No. 88 Mainz . They died on the third day of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 in battles in Wœrth in Alsace against the troops of Marshal Patrice de Mac-Mahon . About 150 citizens of Bockenheim took part and fought in this war. The erection and inauguration of the war memorial on September 2, 1875, Sedan Day , was a public demonstration by the bourgeoisie loyal to the emperor. It was in favor of the establishment of an empire in 1871, which was also associated with an industrial boom for Bockenheim.
