The war memorial from 1871 in Gehrden in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony is a memorial for the Franco-German peace and a memorial for those who died in the Franco-German War of 1870/71.

The listed building is on Kirchstrasse next to the tower of the Margaret Church in Gehrden.

Established in 1873 by the municipalities Gehrden and Northen erected monument consists of an obelisk from Wealden - sandstone . It stands on a small base surrounded by boulders next to a pedunculate oak . The south side facing the church tower bears the inscription commemorating the conclusion of the Preliminary Peace of Versailles:

Inscription on the north side of the obelisk

The more weathered north side of the obelisk facing Kirchstrasse bears the inscription:

"During this war
, Eduard Muntzel
from the
local community found the heroic death of the 16th Inf-Regt Heinrich [...] Unterofficier from the 56th Inf-Regt Gehrden 1873"





Inscription on the monument base

As part of the extension of the Margaret Church in 1909, the memorial was also redesigned. It was surrounded with several small boulders. The monument base bears the inscription, which is difficult to read, facing Kirchstrasse:

"After the church was rebuilt
by S [...] rebuilt in
1909"

Others

A memorial on Kirchstrasse near the sacristy of the Margarethenkirche commemorates those who died in World War I and a plaque in front of those who fell in World War II . The villages that were incorporated into Gehrden in 1971 usually have their own war memorials.
