The Crimean Front ( Russian Крымский фронт / Krymski front) was a major unit of the Red Army during the Second World War . The Crimean Front was formed on January 28, 1942 from the Caucasus Front and the Sevastopol Defense Area and existed until May 19, 1942. The subordinate units were transferred to the North Caucasus Front .

Operations

Under the supervision of Lev Sakharovich Mechlis , who acted as the representative of the Stawka , the front launched an attack on the German 11th Army under Colonel General Erich von Manstein on February 27, 1942 . A counter-offensive by German troops between May 8 and 19, 1942 ( Operation Trappenjagd ) drove the three armies of the Crimean front (44th, 47th and 51st Army) into the sea with heavy losses (150,000 men). Only the Sevastopol fortress was able to hold out until July 2, 1942.
