from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kris Merckx (* 1944 in Stekene ) is a Belgian politician of the PVDA , doctor and editor of the party newspaper Solidair . He is a co-founder of AMADA, the forerunner of the PVDA, and co-founder of its mass organization Geneeskunde voor het Volk . He has been a Member of the Provincial Council of Antwerp since 2012 .

Life

Together with Ludo Martens , he was the cradle of AMADA in 1970 , which was renamed PVDA in 1979. Together with Michel Leyers he started the first practice of Geneeskunde voor het Volk (GvhV - Medicine for the People) on January 4th, 1971 . Together with the other doctors from GVFV and the PVDA, he played an important role in the uncovering of massive lead poisoning by the Union Minière in the Antwerp district of Hoboken .

He was editor-in-chief of the weekly party newspaper Solidair for 13 years and a spokesman on behalf of his party. Because of his much political work, he had to give up his practice as a doctor. The younger generation, including Peter Mertens and Mie Branders, has now taken on his role. Since then, his political work has taken less time and from 2001 onwards he again worked part-time as a doctor in a group practice of GVHV in Hoboken . Kris Merckx retired in summer 2009. In the same year he was awarded the local group of sp.a the merit award of Hoboken. That was unusual, given the fact that Merckx had a very tense relationship with the Socialist Partij (SP) at the time, the forerunner of today's sp.a, in the 1970s and 1980s. Kris Merckx laid down his forty years of experience as a doctor and politician in the autobiographical work "Dokter van het volk" (Doctor of the People).

Kris Merckx was elected twice in the 2012 local elections. He gained a seat on the Provincial Council of Antwerp and was elected as City District Council of Hoboken .
