Life

Shortly before the end of the First World War , the only 15-year-old Kroc pretended to be older in order to be recruited as an ambulance driver; however, the war ended before he finished his training. In the 1930s he acted as a salesman for paper cups. In the late 1930s, Kroc left his secure job and moved across the country selling his kitchen accessories, including his multi-blender, to the people. In 1954, Kroc became aware of the brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald when they reordered six of his milkshake mixers in one order, which he visited in their California Diner restaurant in San Bernardino .

Hoping to capitalize on the brothers' success, Kroc bought the franchise rights to open his own McDonald’s restaurant in Des Plaines , Illinois . The milkshakes , french fries, and hamburgers were just as successful in Illinois as they were in California . In 1961, he bought the McDonald brothers' business for $ 2.7 million and opened restaurants around the world. The McDonald brothers had sold part of the rights to a manufacturer of ice cream, which Kroc bought back. So he opened a branch across from the McDonald brothers' first restaurant and pushed them out of business. In 1977 he wrote his autobiography Grinding It Out and described himself as the founder of McDonald's. Kroc died of heart failure in 1984 at the age of 81 during his third marriage .
