Richard James "Dick" McDonald (born February 16, 1909 in Manchester , New Hampshire , † July 14, 1998 in Bedford , New Hampshire) and his brother Maurice James "Mac" McDonald (born November 26, 1902 in Manchester, New Hampshire; † December 11, 1971 in Riverside , California ) were American fast food pioneers.

Life

The first McDonald’s in San Bernardino, demolished in 1976. In the same position there is now a museum, which was built in 1998. Only the shield remains of the original structure.

Her parents, Patrick J. McDonald and Margarete, emigrated from Ireland to the United States as toddlers in 1877 and 1884, respectively . In 1910 the family lived in Hillsborough County , New Hampshire. Patrick opened his restaurant, The Airdrome, near the Monrovia , California airport in 1937 .

The brothers moved this restaurant to San Bernardino , California, 40 miles east, on May 15, 1940 , and renamed it McDonald’s Bar-BQ . On December 20, 1948, they not only switched to self-service, but also rationalized the preparation of their hamburgers.

They wanted to become millionaires before they turned 50. In 1953, gas station attendant Neil Fox became the founders' first franchisee with his fast food restaurant in Phoenix , Arizona . The architect Stanley Clark Meston from Fontana , California created a standard design with the golden arches after Richard's idea. The McDonald's restaurant at 10207 Lakewood Blvd., Downey , California has been open since 1953 and is the oldest operating McDonald's restaurant ( 33 ° 56 ′ 50.9 "  N , 118 ° 7 ′ 4.3"  W ). In the same year the second franchise restaurant opened in Downey. In 1954 they took on the milkshake machine seller Ray Kroc as a franchisee, who bought the business from them in 1961 for 2.7 million dollars.

Richard McDonald was married with a stepson, Gale French, and two grandchildren.

Movie

The 2016 American film The Founder, directed by John Lee Hancock , tells the story of the two brothers and Ray Kroc. Nick Offerman stars as Dick and John Carroll Lynch played Mac.
