The spherical gas tank in Wuppertal (also Möbeck gas tank , as the Wuppertaler Stadtwerke is called) in the Wuppertal district of Vohwinkel was built in 1958 by the MAN plant in Gustavsburg and was at the time the largest spherical gas tank in the world.
description
The gas container is located near the Sonnborner Kreuz in an industrial area which, with around 200 inhabitants, is also the statistical quarter of Wuppertal under the name “ Industriestraße ”, at the intersection of Industriestraße and Essener Straße . It is operated by the Wuppertal public utilities , for which it was built in 1958. The sphere with a diameter of 47.3 meters was made from 30 mm thick sheet steel and has a volume of around 55,000 m³ and a surface area of around 7,000 m². The storage capacity is a maximum of 270,000 m³ (normal cubic meters) of natural gas, making the structure the largest spherical gas tank in Germany. In the mid-1980s it was still listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest spherical gas container in Europe. The transfer station supplies 75 percent of the Wuppertal city area and was modernized at the beginning of 2005 in an eight-month construction phase for 850,000 euros.
Gas expansion turbine plant
There is also a gas expansion turbine system (GEA) on the site , which was commissioned in June 2002. The GEA serves to reduce the pressure of the gas coming from the transfer station for natural gas, which is also located there. This releases volume work , the energy required to compress the gas, which is released again when it is relaxed and which is used to generate electricity .
