The Kuhurluj (Ukrainian Кугурлуй , Romanian Cugurlui ) is an 82 km² lake in the Ukraine near the border with Romania . The freshwater lake with an irregular circular shape is a flat oxbow lake of the Danube and has a diameter of about 20 km. It is located in the northern Danube Delta and is connected to the Jalpuhsee in the north and the lower Danube in the south.

geography

The lake is located in the southeast of Odessa Oblast in Reni district and borders on Ismajil district with its east bank . The village of Nowa Nekrasiwka is on the north bank, the village of Novosilske in the northwest and the town of Ismajil about 10 km northeast of the lake.

In the 1970s, a dam with a bridge in the central part was built between Jalpuhsee and Kuhurluj, which reduced the water exchange between the lakes by almost a third. Over the dam which runs highway M 15 , of Reni leads to Ismail.

Hydrography

The lake has a low, swampy shore, its bottom is muddy and the average depth is 0.8–1 m with a maximum depth of 2.5 m. The mineralization of the water is 278-514 mg per liter. The water level of the lake depends on the water level of the Danube, from which 86% of its water comes. The climate at the lake is continental with short, mild winters and long, hot summers. The surface temperature of the water reaches up to + 28–30 ° C in summer and often below 0 ° C in winter, so that the lake is covered with ice for up to a month. The annual amount of precipitation is 350–400 mm, the evaporation is 800–900 mm.

Flora and fauna

Rare bird species and a significant number of different species of waterfowl can be found at the lake, with a seasonal concentration of up to 30,000 birds in autumn and winter. Especially in the swamps on the south-eastern shore of the lake there is the only colony in Ukraine of the Dalmatian pelican , the largest in Europe. The wetland is also important as a breeding ground and nursery for fish and amphibians, and as a habitat for several rare and endangered plant species. The Kuhurluj is a 6,500 hectare nature reserve according to the Ramsar Convention .
