Suma e. V. (own spelling: SUMA-EV) is a registered association with its headquarters in Hanover . One of the aims of the association is to operate the MetaGer meta search engine . Dominik Hebeler has been the executive board member since February 1, 2019; Association founder and managing director until January 31, 2019: Wolfgang Sander-Beuermann .

The association, which was founded on July 5, 2004 in Hanover, initially had this name: Non-profit association for the promotion of search engine technology and free access to knowledge, SuMa-eV . After being renamed in 2009, the non-profit association bears the name SUMA-EV - Association for Free Access to Knowledge. Its founding members included u. a. Wolfgang Sander-Beuermann ( regional data center for Lower Saxony at the time ), Karlheinz Brandenburg ( Technical University Ilmenau ), Wolfgang Ertmer ( University of Hanover ) and Rainer Appelt (New Media State Capital Hanover / Federal Association of German Internet Portals, BDIP).

Board members as of February 1, 2019 are Dominik Hebeler, Nils Jensen (Ostfalia) and Carsten Riel.

aims

The association wants to make a contribution that the digital knowledge of the world remains freely accessible without the tutelage of states or corporations. For this purpose, the following goals are declared in the guidelines:

  1. Findability and accessibility of knowledge
  2. Access to knowledge while maintaining informational self-determination and protection against crime
  3. Transparency of knowledge assessment and presentation
  4. Pluralism of knowledge access
  5. Promotion of information literacy.

The association is co-initiator of the initiative or the concept of Open Web Index (OWI) to create an independent index as a basis for offers on the Internet, such as map services, search engines or comparison services.

To realize these goals, the association operates in collaboration with the University of Hanover , the search engine MetaGer . In addition, Suma e. V. the development of further special search engines. A specialist congress is usually organized every year.

Linux migration advice

In connection with the disclosure of the surveillance program PRISM by the former CIA and NSA employee and whistleblower Edward Snowden , the private television broadcaster SAT reported. 1 in his magazine 17:30 Sat.1 in June 2013 about the free advice offered by Suma on switching to the Linux operating system .

SUMA Congress

The association organizes its congress approximately every year, at which social issues related to search engines and the Internet are presented and discussed.

SUMA Awards / Scholarships

To promote its goals, the association has presented the SUMA Award annually since 2007 . Since 2018, these awards have been given as scholarships to students at German universities and colleges who prepare a scientific paper for the development of search engine technology and the promotion of free access to knowledge and who have or can gain general importance.

The association is financed through membership fees, monetary donations, donations for online purchases and advertising links.
