The former “Wilhelm Pieck” cultural center is a listed building in the Salbke district of Magdeburg . The building, which is now used as a residential building, served as a cultural center for VEB Fahlberg-List for more than four decades .

Location and architecture

The building at Alt Salbke 50 was built around 1880/1890 as a three-storey representative residential building. The gate of the Fahlberg-List chemical plant was directly opposite the building. The house has a facade with baroque decorative elements. There are arched arcades on the ground floor. The house is covered with a flat roof , the cornice is clearly emphasized. The overall impression is reminiscent of a palazzo in the Renaissance style . To the south is the also listed residential building Alt Salbke 51 .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Roebers Hotel was located in the building . The owner was Friedrich Roeber . Later, the casino was located in the property . There was a great hall in the back and a bowling alley . From around 1905 to 1912 Christian Curio , the former miller of the Curioschen Windmühle Westerhüsen , lived in the house.

The interior of the restaurant was characterized by carpets, and there were double tables for card players. The regular guests of the restaurant each had their own large beer glass with a name or number with a tin lid. During the Second World War , the restaurant was reserved for German workers from the Fahlberg-List company. Nevertheless, a few French forced laborers turned up unmolested every now and then .

On March 24, 1946, the building was the scene of the forced unification of the SPD and KPD to form the SED for the city of Magdeburg. Initially, the district party conventions of both parties met separately. The SPD in the casino, the KPD in the Fahlberg-List canteen. In the afternoon of the day, the KPD delegates moved into the casino hall. In 1966, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary to commemorate the event, the sculptor Walter Bischof added the words In unity our strengths to the facade on the ground floor of the building . Under the symbol of the SED , the note was added on March 24, 1946 in the hall of this house, the two workers' parties of the city of Magdeburg to form the Socialist Unity Party of Germany . After the political change in 1989 , the lettering was removed. The place of the lettering is still striking today due to the lack of a window that is only hinted at.

In 1950 the property was acquired by Fahlberg-List and converted into a cultural center. The works library with around 4,100 volumes was later housed here. A considerable amount of cultural work took place. The house served as a venue for the Makarenko dramatic circle. In 1953/1954, with the support of actors from the city ​​theater , including Anneliese Matschulat , the fairy tale Cinderella was performed. The illustrator Albert Moritz Rusche , who lives in Salbke , also led a drawing circle at Fahlberg-List. The work's 110-person folk art ensemble also rehearsed here. The amateur group was supported by professional artists, such as the Berlin director Joachim Hoyer , Wilfried Schmidt from the Magdeburg theater and the dance teacher Ruth Hartkopf . The artistic direction was temporarily held by Kurt Gehrmann, District Secretary of the Kulturbund .

In 1973 a special cabinet was set up to deal with the history of the World Youth Festival . There were also exhibitions on subjects such as “Days of Friendship with the CSSR”, in which the CSSR was presented. The Kulturhaus was also the location for the plant's festive events. So here gave Gerald Götting (CDU, Deputy Chairman of the Council of State) on 3 November 1977 Fahlberg List the award Banner of Labor in stage I. 1979 followed by the establishment of a tradition Cabinet. A company cabaret Die Pille was also active at times . Other working groups dealt with numismatics and photography. In 1984/1985 there was a further expansion of the cultural center.

During the 21st Workers' Festival in 1986, the Kulturhaus served as a literary center from June 18, 1986. Circle of writing workers competed for gold medals in front of a jury. In addition, well-known GDR writers such as Jochen Hauser , Helmut Preißler and Martin Viertel , who also acted as chairman of the jury, read . Helmut Richter ran a writing workshop. On June 21, 1986, Hermann Kant gave a reading from his novel manuscript Kino . The award ceremony was held on the same day by Harald Bühl , Secretary of the FDGB Federal Executive Board, and Klaus Höpcke , Deputy GDR Minister of Culture. In July of the same year the house of culture was named " Wilhelm Pieck " after the first president of the GDR .

In 1990 a savings bank was set up in the premises of the restaurant of the Kulturhaus, later a citizens' office of the city administration. A smaller shopping center was built at the rear of the Kulturhaus site. On October 1, 2011, the Citizens Library Bookmarks of the Salbke, Westerhüsen, Fermersleben e. V. There is also an ATM of the Stadtsparkasse Magdeburg in the building . This device was blown up by strangers on the night of June 23, 2014.
