Kumble R. Subbaswamy (* in Bangalore , Karnataka ) is an American physicist and university official of Indian origin. He has been Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst since 2012 .

Life

Subbaswamy studied physics at Bangalore University , where he received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in 1969 . He then continued his studies at the University of Delhi , where he received a Master of Science degree in 1971 . In 1976 he received his PhD in the United States from Indiana University in Bloomington , Indiana . After receiving his doctorate, he was a Research Associate in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Irvine, from 1976 to 1978 . In 1978 he was appointed to the University of Kentucky in Lexington , Kentucky , where he taught from 1978 to 1982 as an assistant professor , from 1982 to 1988 as an associate professor and from 1988 to 1997 as a professor. In addition to teaching, Subbaswamy was Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences from 1991 to 1993 and Chairman of the University's Department of Physics & Astronomy from 1993 to 1997 . From 1997 to 2000 he taught as a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Miami in Coral Gables , Florida and was also Dean of the University's College of Arts and Sciences . From 2000 to 2006 he was a professor in the Department of Physics at Indiana University and also served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences there. 2006 returned to the University of Kentucky and taught until 2012 as a professor. He was also Provost of the University from 2006 to 2012 and Executive Director of the University of Kentucky Research Foundation (UKRF) from 2007 to 2012 . Subbaswamy has been Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst since 2012 and holds the position of Chancellor of the university.

In 1992 he was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society .
