Kuno from Stoffeln
Kuno von Stoffeln (* before 1365; † October 19, 1411 ) was Prince Abbot of St. Gallen from 1379 until his death . He came from the family of the Lords of Stoffeln with seat on the Hohenstoffeln castles on the Hohenstoffeln in Hegau . He was significantly involved in the Appenzell Wars, because the city refused to pay homage to him, and the Appenzellers as his subjects even refused to pay taxes. Due to the drop in the price of grain after the devastating plague epidemic, he had to drastically increase taxes to compensate for lost income. He joined forces first with the cities of Lake Constance devoted to him, and later with Duke Friedrich of Austria , in order to put a stop to the people's strivings for freedom. However, he was not granted the luck of war; the Abbot army was losing battle after battle. In the end he felt compelled to sell or lease land in order to fill the monastery coffers. He left behind a completely run-down monastery that had become insignificant compared to the emerging city. In later chronicles of the 15th century he is portrayed as a real specter.
