Fanø Art Museum
The Fanø Art Museum (Danish: Fanø Art Museum ) is located in the center of the village of Sønderho on the Danish North Sea island of Fanø . The exhibition building was financed by Alice og Tage Sørensens Fund and opened in 1992.
history
The collector Ruth Heinemann put together a collection of so-called Fanø paintings over a period of several years, which was first presented to a wide audience in 1969 thanks to the support of the former Danish Prime Minister Viggo Kampmann and the mayor of Esbjerg, Henning Rasmussen.
As the collection grew, a permanent exhibition space was finally found: In July 1992 the Fanø Art Museum opened in a former factory building or shop ( Kromanns Hus ) in Sønderho.
collection
The museum collects, researches and mediates art whose creators have not only motivic, but above all biographical connections to the island of Fanø. Many of the works in the collection, which comprises more than 1,100 pieces - especially paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries - are presented in annual exhibitions. In addition, an accompanying program with changing young artists will be implemented.
The collection includes works by the painters Holger Drachmann , Erik Enevold , Julius Exner , Viggo Fauerholdt , Carl-Johan Forsberg , Annemarie Hansen , Sigvard Marius Hansen , Niels Holbak , Gert and Martin Konopacki , Franz List , Frederik Christian Lund , Walther Meinhardt , Niels Pedersen Mols , Johan Carl Neumann , Johan Rohde , KHR Sonderborg , Carl Frederik Sørensen , Felix Walner and August Wilckens .
The research and communication work of the museum focuses on “Fanø painting” and the question of the extent to which we can speak of an actual artist colony .
