The Art Museum Osaka ( jap. 大阪市立美術館 , Osaka Shiritsu Bijutsukan ) is located in the municipality Tennoji in Osaka . The museum is located on the site of the former residence of the Sumitomo family. The Sumitomo family donated the property with a Japanese garden (the Keitaku garden ) for the construction of the museum . The museum opened on May 1, 1936.

The establishment

Itō Masafumi and Unagami Seiichi designed the building. The construction work that had started in December 1927 was stopped several times, so that it took almost ten years. The building was finally completed in April 1936. The construction of steel framework, reinforcing steel and concrete consists of a basement, three upper floors (including the ground floor) and a penthouse . The floor area is 4033 m², the total floor area is 12,716 m².

In 1942, the building of the museum for anti-aircraft purposes was occupied by the army and converted into the headquarters of the Third Division. Because of the confiscation by the occupation troops from 1945 to 1947 , activities in the museum were discontinued.

Four underground exhibition halls, which enable several exhibitions to run simultaneously, were added in 1992. In the affiliated art research institute, practical skills in sketching, painting and sculpture are tested. The institute has produced large numbers of Western and Japanese style painters , contemporary artists, and architects throughout its history.

Most important preserved works of art

Many of the works in the museum were acquired through donation or purchase of individual collections, 8,000 of them from Osaka-based collectors. The art museum includes works of art from Buddhist art , Mediterranean cultures (such as Etruria ), paintings and writings from China, Japanese paintings from the Edo and Meiji periods , metalworking, lacquer art and ceramics.

There are also objects deposited in Jinja and Buddhist temples . From the beginning, it was planned not only to lend exhibition halls for group exhibitions and large-scale exhibitions, but also to hold permanent exhibitions of the collections.

The Abe collection contains a copy of a writing by Wang Wei , Dong Qichang and Su Shi's works. In addition, are Ogata Kōrin , Katsushika Hokusai and Mi Fu represented. The works listed above are the property of Osaka City.

Current plans

In addition, the Osaka Art Museum houses a collection of contemporary art from the 19th century: works by Kitano Tsunetomi , Shima Seien ( Nihonga ), photos by photographer Yasui Nakaji and Yoshihara Jirō , who worked in Osaka, paintings by Saeki Yūzō . Foreign artists such as Amedeo Modigliani , Constantin Brâncuși and Gerhard Richter are also represented in the museum. Taking the donation from Saeki Yūzō as an occasion, the authorities presented the construction plan of a museum for modern art on the 100th anniversary of the city government ( shi ). In particular, the acquisition of Modigliani's works for 1.6 billion yen was discussed.

The former position of the Faculty of Medicine at Osaka University in Nakanoshima was considered. However, as a medieval warehouse ( 蔵 屋 敷 , Kuraya-shiki ) was excavated during the construction work and the authorities were difficult to raise the construction costs of 28 billion yen , the construction plans were frozen. In 2004 a parcel (the site of the former Ikemitsu Art Museum) was acquired next to the Tōkyū Hanzu department store in Nagahoridōri in the Shinsaibashi district . In 2007 it was decided that construction work should be resumed in five years.
