The Kunstraum Niederoesterreich in Palais Niederösterreich is a public exhibition house for young Austrian and international contemporary art in Vienna , which has existed since 2005. The main focus of the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich is on the promotion of performance art. The art space shows solo and group exhibitions and regularly organizes discussion and communication formats on topics of contemporary art. A reference library offers literature on various subject areas of the exhibitions, performance art and contemporary art. The Kunstraum Niederoesterreich has been part of the NÖ Festival und Kino GmbH since 2019 and is mainly supported by public funds.

history

The Niederoesterreich art space was opened on November 4, 1985 as the Blue-Yellow Gallery of the Lower Austria Museum (formerly the Lower Austrian State Museum) under the direction of Peter Zawrel in Herrengasse 19-21 in Vienna with an exhibition by Otto Beckmann . As early as 1990, the Blue-Yellow Gallery occupied the premises of the State Museum's graphic cabinet at Herrengasse 9. It was closed in 1997 in connection with the relocation of the Lower Austrian capital and the seat of the Lower Austrian regional government to St. Pölten . In addition to promoting young Lower Austrian artists, the focus of the gallery was also on the integration of newer media such as photography and video art. By the time it was closed, it had presented works of art by around 150 artists in more than 120 exhibitions.

In 2005, the 300 m² exhibition space in the former country house on the neighboring Herrengasse 13 opened under a new name as Kunstraum Niederoesterreich. Between 2005 and 2018 Christiane Krejs (* 1956, St. Pölten) headed the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich. The curator and scientist Katharina Brandl (* 1986, Vienna) has been the artistic director since 2019 . Katrin Deutsch will be the location manager from 2019 .

architecture

The Niederoesterreich art space is part of the Palais Niederösterreich . The former Liechtenstein free house was acquired by the provincial cities in 1513. Originally designed in a late Gothic style by the stonemasons of the cathedral building, the construction was not completed in the 1520s. The original building has since been redesigned and expanded in many sections. Around 1570, Hans Saphoy vaulted the large conference room, which was later given a baroque design. Knight's Hall, Lord's Hall and Prelate's Hall were expanded by master builder Leopold Ernst in 1845/46. The last major renovation by Alois Pichl , between 1837 and 1839, aimed to give the building a uniform facade while retaining the older structure. Today this facade is considered an important example of classicism in Vienna.

Between 2002 and 2004 the Niederoesterreich art space on the ground floor and an event center on the upper floor of the Palais Niederösterreich were designed by Lindner Architektur ZT. The aim of the architects was to calm down and unify the conglomerate created by the various interventions: “What was important to us about the revitalization is the legibility of the historical building sections, the recognizability of the respective interventions and the legibility of the individual manuscripts, as far as they are for us today are understandable ". The remainder of a medieval ceiling fresco is still visible in the Niederoesterreich art space, which is intended to establish a connection with the history of the building.

Exhibitions

The Kunstraum Niederoesterreich shows around three exhibitions a year, with a focus on young Austrian and international artistic positions. The group exhibitions mostly deal with social and political issues, although formal issues can also be the focus. The exhibitions are understood as “structure, display and content in a dialogue between institutions, artists and networkers” that set new accents with “alternative exhibition formats and curatorial concepts”. A catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition, which is currently being published by VfmK Verlag für Moderne Kunst . The guest curators included a. Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein , Brigitte Kowanz , Ruth Schnell , Elisabeth von Samsonow , Sylvia Eckermann , Ursula Hübner and Ingeborg Strobl .

In the first exhibition “Profiler” from 2005, Élise Mougin, Stephan Lugbauer, Anna Jermolaewa , Siggi Hofer and Judith Fegerl examined the identity of the Lower Austria region .
