Kurow is a small town in the Waitaki District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name Kurow represents the Europeanized form of the Māori name Kohurau , which means "thick fog" and was given for the 1901 m high mountain in the St Marys Range southwest of the place. According to a Māori legend , a chieftain conjured up the mist in the area while he was being pursued by enemies.
geography
Kurow is located around 56 kilometers northwest of Oamaru in the Waitaki River valley . To the southwest of the village rise the up to 2009 m high St Marys Range and to the north the Kirkliston Range . About 12 km northwest of the village is Lake Waitaki and northwest of it is Lake Aviemore .
history
Kurow was founded in 1878 and developed from 1881 with the construction of the railway bridge over the Waitaki River .
economy
The main source of income for the local residents is agriculture and sheep breeding and, in part, the income from the hydroelectric power plants in the vicinity of Kurow. Kurow is also known for its viticulture, especially the Pinot noir variety .

In the 2013 census, the town had 312 inhabitants, 8.0% fewer than in the 2006 census.
