The Kurhaus (also: Kursaal ) in Bad Honnef , a town in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia , dates back to 1906. It is located on the main street (house number 28) and forms the center of the city's historic spa district.

history

After a 250 m deep mineral spring - the so-called "Dragon Spring" - was drilled at the Honnef Austraße in 1897, the steadily growing spa business began the following year at the same location. From 1901 the Villa Haarhaus on Hauptstrasse was initially used as the spa, built between 1872 and 1874 for the Barmer manufacturer Julius Haarhaus, whose son Julius R. (1867-1947) was a well-known writer during his lifetime. It was bought by the city of Honnef for this purpose on April 4, 1901 and rebuilt at a cost of 150,000 marks . The municipal tourist office was located in a pavilion in the spa garden as an information point for domestic and foreign transport and spa administration matters. In 1906, following a supraregional tender process, a new Kurhaus was built at right angles to the Villa Haarhaus - ceremoniously opened on April 21, 1907 - and at about the same time a foyer and a music pavilion. The Honnef town builder Wilhelm Schwingen was commissioned with the design , who was supported by the town builder of Idar-Oberstein . The city's new spa center developed into a cultural center and was the venue for concerts, theater performances and other festive events. The writer Nanny Lambrecht took care of the recruitment of foreign artists.

After the beginning of World War I , the Kurhaus served as the headquarters of the management of a committee that coordinated the admission of wounded and sick soldiers to the various hospitals in the city. In November 1923, Honnef was occupied in the course of the separatist movements to establish a Rhenish Republic . At a celebration of the separatists in the Kursaal on November 12th, it was devastated and the furniture went up in flames.

In 1937/1938, when the old one was demolished, a new foyer and a new drinking hall were built. In 1939 the spa garden was expanded by demolishing a villa opposite the Protestant church . Around 1949 the Kurhaus was confiscated for use by employees of the Allied High Commission . The Federal Press Conference took place here on September 14, 1950 . In 1950 the building was renovated. In 1967 it was expanded to include a restaurant porch made of exposed concrete , a boundary wall to the main street was built and the Villa Haarhaus on the site was demolished. In 1987 the city of Bad Honnef took over the operation of the Kurhaus. Another renovation phase began in 1989: the front of the restaurant was demolished in favor of a new building with a foyer on the ground floor and sanitary facilities in the basement, and from 1991 to 1993 the interior of the Kursaal with its valuable Art Nouveau decor was restored, with a stage building being demolished. The Kurhaus has been part of the Bad Honnef Congress Park since 2000 and is still a cultural center of the city. The so-called Eel King Festival has been held there every year since 2003 . Starting in 2016, another multi-year renovation of the Kurhaus was in progress, which in future, like the regular maintenance measures, is to be carried out on the basis of a renovation concept. The main phase of the renovation began in March 2019, was completed in April 2020 and cost 7.5 million euros.

The “spa garden”, in which the spa facilities are located, includes some rare tree species. The water fountain in the pump room is covered by water from the Edelhoff - hot spring fed, the 1967/1968 in today's Park Reiterndorf was drilled. Kurhaus, bathhouse and drinking house are listed as historical monuments . The entry in the list of monuments of the city of Bad Honnef took place on August 11, 1983.
