history

The Protestant parish church in the Honnef townscape (1900)

After the establishment of a Protestant parish in Honnef on July 1, 1895, it was decided in 1896 to build a parish church and a rectory . It was created according to a design and under the overall construction management of the church builder Ludwig Hofmann - the design of the details was done by the Honnef architect Ottomar Stein - in the form of a neo-Romanesque church building with a barrel vault . Empress Auguste Viktoria took over the patronage in a later construction phase ; Wilhelm II intervened in the planning with his own pencil drawing and implemented the bishop's cap, which is commonly used in northern Germany, as the tower end instead of the tall and slender helmet that Hofmann had planned . Both donated the glass mosaic window above the main entrance, while Queen Sophia of Sweden and Norway donated a choir window. The laying of the foundation stone was celebrated on May 29, 1899, and the consecration took place on December 2, 1900. The Protestant chapel at Linzer Straße 24/26, previously used by the community, was subsequently profaned and sold in 1901 to the Jewish community of Honnef , which had its headquarters there in 1902 Set up a synagogue .

At the end of the Second World War , the church was damaged, the original condition during the subsequent restoration - which also included relocating the church entrance - was not completely restored. In 1960 the sanctuary was extensively redesigned and renewed . In 1983 changes were made to the side windows of the church. The church building was entered in the monuments list of the city of Bad Honnef on January 7, 1992. Since 1997 it has been called the “Church of the Redeemer”. The last renovation was carried out in 2006. On December 3, 2016, the funeral service for the deceased Bundestag Vice President Peter Hintze took place in the Erlöserkirche in the presence of political celebrities .
