The Catholic parish church of St. Johann Baptist is a landmark of the city of Bad Honnef in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located northwest of the town hall on the market and church square in the center of the city. The church stands as a monument since 1988 under monument protection .

history

Today's church has at least two previous buildings, the older of which can be dated to the early 8th century. This three-nave stone church was replaced by a late Romanesque church before the Gothic hall church , also with three aisles, was built after 1500 using the five-story tower and two pillars of the previous church. It was built in Trachyt vom Drachenfels in two construction phases. In 1859/1860 the church tower received a new, eight-sided gothic helmet and new gables. From 1913 to 1914, a transept was added according to plans by the Cologne architect Eduard Endler . In 1964/1965 the tower and nave were re-plastered , and further renovations in 1979 and 2010/2011. A thorough renovation began for the first time in 38 years in September 2017 and was completed in early December 2018.

Furnishing

The sacrament house in the left choir belongs to the preserved original furnishings . His figure program dates from the end of the 15th century and was made by a Cologne workshop. A sandstone sculpture from 1514 stands in the left wall of the transept and represents the Holy Sepulcher . The baptismal font of the church comes from the Romanesque previous building and is therefore the oldest piece of furniture. He was from Siebengebirgsmuseum - Trachyt created and revised in 1939 and supplemented by a hand driven copper lid. The holy water font dates back to the 14th century, but has only been in the Honnef church since 1939 - when it was acquired in Ittenbach . A representation of the church patron can be found in the right aisle. Also worth mentioning are a high-quality alabaster relief depicting the flagellation of Christ, created around 1550, as well as a Rhenish statue of Mary made of stone from the 15th century.

One of the most important pieces of equipment in the church is a Gothic tower monstrance with rich figurative decorations, the Löwenburger monstrance . A goldsmith's workshop in Cologne made them at the end of the 15th century. A sundial dates from the 17th century and was replaced by a wheel clock in 1747 . More recently added works are a votive picture to commemorate pilgrimages to Bornhofen Monastery in 1939 and the "Sacred Heart Carpet", which covers a Romanesque pillar. In 1960 the colored choir windows by the Cologne glass painter Pauly were created. A life-size baroque crucifixion group on the southern outer wall of the church dates from 1987 .

A Servatius relic from the Bad Honnef Servatius chapel is also kept in the church of St. Johann Baptist .

organ

The organ in the parish church was built in 1961 by the Breil company . The remote control was built by an unknown builder in a baroque case for a church in Langenfeld- Richrath and is now used here as an auxiliary work , designed as a portal organ. The overall system thus has 46  stops , distributed over three manuals and pedal . The main organ's action is mechanical, the auxiliary organ is electrical. The stop actions are electric.
