Edwin Jongejans (born December 18, 1966 in Amstelveen ) is a former Dutch diver . He started jumping from the 1-meter and 3-meter board. Jongejans was world and European champion on the 1-meter board, and he took part in two Olympic Games .
Jongejans experienced his first participation in a major championship at the 1986 World Cup in Madrid , where he was tenth on the 3-meter board. In 1988 he first took part in the Olympic Games in Seoul . He reached the final in jumping from the 3-meter board and was eighth. In the following year Jongejans won his first international medal, at the European Championships in 1989 in Bonn he was European champion on the 1-meter board. His sporting most successful year was 1991. At the European Championships in Athens he won bronze from the 1-meter board and at the World Championships inHe surprised all of the competition in Perth and became world champion on the 1-meter board, and he also achieved eighth place on the 3-meter board. Jongejans is thus the first title holder in both the European and World Championships in jumping from the 1-meter board, as it was only included in the program in 1989 and 1991 respectively. Jongejans also started at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , he reached the final again from the 3-meter board and was seventh. At the European Championships in Vienna in 1995 he was again European champion from the 1-meter board and ended his active career a little later.
Jongejans is still the most successful Dutch diver at European championships and the only one who could win a medal at a world championship. For his World Cup triumph, he was voted Sportsman of the Year 1991 in his home country .
He studied at the University of Miami until 1984 , where he trained with the university's sports team, the Hurricanes . Today he works as a trainer at the British Diving Center in Leeds .
His sister Daphne Jongejans was also a successful water diver. She became the first Dutch European champion in 1987.
