The Kurt Schumacher Bridge is the youngest bridge over the Moselle in Koblenz . It connects the districts of Metternich and Moselweiß with connections to the B 416 and B 49 . The city's third road bridge over the Moselle at km 3.95 has a length of 355 m and was completed in 1990. It is named after Kurt Schumacher , the first SPD chairman after the Second World War.

history

The B 9 represents the main traffic axis in north-south direction through Koblenz. The crossing of the Moselle over the Europabrücke represents a bottleneck. Although the Europabrücke was widened to eight lanes in 1974, the bridge was visibly overloaded. The volume of traffic had increased excessively in the 1980s. It became more and more urgent to relieve the Europabrücke and to create a new crossing over the Moselle. With the construction of the Kurt-Schumacher-Bridge on the west side of the city center of Koblenz it was achieved that the traffic on the left side of the Moselle is directed into the center and the administrative center in Moselweiß before the Europabrücke.

The laying of the foundation stone by Mayor Willi Hört was celebrated on July 15, 1987. The road was opened to traffic after a construction period of 2½ years on August 20, 1990. The construction costs of the Kurt-Schumacher-Bridge amounted to 67 million DM (57,150,364 €).

The first renovation measures, during which wear parts were replaced, took place in June / July 2014. In the same year, the city of Koblenz rejected a connection on the east side of the Kurt-Schumacher-Brücke through a tunnel under the Moselle route to Beatusstraße in the gold mine . Citizens of Moselle White are demanding this connection, as they fear that the construction of the north bypass (2015-2016), a connection from the B 9 (Bubenheimer Kreisel) to the western bridge connection, will cause further traffic congestion in the district.

construction

The Kurt Schumacher Bridge is a haunched girder bridge made of prestressed concrete and has a length of 355 m. It has four lanes and a footpath and bike path on the south side. The height of the deck above the water surface is around 15 meters in the middle of the bridge. The water depth in the middle of the bridge (fairway) is about five meters. There is a P + R parking lot under the bridge on both sides of the connection .
