The Güls railway bridge in Koblenz is a bridge between the districts of Güls and Moselweiß . On it the Moselle line Trier- Koblenz crosses the Moselle .
history
The Güls railway bridge was built almost simultaneously with the Horchheim railway bridge over the Rhine . Both bridges were used to connect the Moselle route to the so-called " Kanonenbahn " Berlin - Metz . In April 1877 construction began on the bridge and in October 1878 it was completed. In 1926 there was a complete reconstruction with reinforcement and a widening of the roadway. The pedestrian walkway on the south side also dates from this time.
Like all Koblenz bridges, the Güls railway bridge was blown up at the end of the Second World War in 1945 by the retreating units of the Wehrmacht . The first arch on the Moselweiss side was destroyed. The damage was repaired between 1946 and 1948.
The railway bridge was strengthened and renovated in 2000 by Deutsche Bahn . In May 2012 it became known that the pedestrian walkway was badly damaged and would have to be renovated in the next few years.
construction
The Güls railway bridge spans the Moselle over a length of 226 m at an angle of 80 degrees. The truss bridge crosses the river on three wrought iron arches with an elevated roadway. The two arches from 1926 on the Güls side come from the Gutehoffnungshütte from Oberhausen , the arch from 1948 on the Moselweisser side from the Hoffnungshütte from Dortmund and the Demag from Duisburg . On both sides of the land there is a 17 m wide arched stone arch as a road passage. The river piers and land arch are clad with sandstone . The base and the surrounding console frieze are set off in darker sandstone.
Monument protection
The Güls railway bridge is a protected cultural monument under the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located near Koblenz-Güls in the district .
