Kurt Emil Schmutzler

Kurt Emil Schmutzler (born November 17, 1895 , † October 29, 1948 in the Landsberg War Crimes Prison ) was SS-Hauptsturmführer and a German camp manager of the Wiener Neudorf subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp .

The trained painter became a member of the SS in 1934 , the NSDAP in 1937 and the Waffen SS from 1940 . From July 1940, Schmutzler was in the Mauthausen concentration camp , where he was mainly employed in various satellite camps . From July 26, 1943 to April 2, 1945 he was the commandant of the Wiener Neudorf satellite camp . He was involved in the evacuation march of this camp to the Mauthausen concentration camp when the Red Army was only 25 km away. Then Schmutzler was still employed as an officer in the Mauthausen concentration camp until May 4, 1945. He and eight other accused were indicted in the course of the Dachau trials in a secondary trial to the main Mauthausen trial. Schmutzler appealed to " higher orders ", was sentenced to death and hanged in October 1948.
