Kurt Grobecker (born February 22, 1936 in Hamburg ; † May 16, 2020 there ) was a German journalist , radio presenter , author and Hamburg chronicler . He became known through his thirty years of activity as a reporter and editor at Norddeutscher Rundfunk and the publication of around 140 books, mainly about the history of his hometown Hamburg and the subject of shipping .

life and work

Kurt Grobecker completed an apprenticeship in typesetting in Hamburg after completing secondary school. After graduating from high school, he studied politics, sociology, economic theory and economic and social history in Hamburg and London. He then became head of the press department of the Port of Hamburg .

Kurt Grobecker has been working as an editor at NDR since 1970, where he initially observed events on the north German roads from a bird's eye view as a flying reporter for the NDR traffic studio from an ADAC aircraft and became his trademark thanks to the "ADAC 25".

From 1980 until his retirement he was in charge of the “Port and Hamburg History” department and was responsible for the “ Hamburg Harbor Concert ”, the world's oldest live radio program that has been broadcast since 1929. His worldwide assignments for the “Hamburg Harbor Concert” took him to London and Copenhagen, Sydney and Shanghai, to Valparaiso, Namibia and the Caribbean.

Kurt Grobecker has published around 140 books since 1972. His topics are primarily shipping and regional history. In his first books he devoted himself to a. the Hanseatic as well as Hanseatic wisdom and the history of the port of Hamburg. The radio reporter processed his knowledge of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg mainly in historical feature sections and "Hamburgensien". These include, for example, his "Memories and peculiarities from the history of Hamburg", the "Alster stories", "Elbe stories", the "Town hall stories" and the "Church stories". In addition, he published with "Sometimes it was even funny ..." biographical sketches in which he worked through the years 1941 to 1948 - the toughest years of the war and the years of laborious new beginning after chaos and destruction in Hamburg. In another biographical book "On Air", Kurt Grobecker describes his experiences as a reporter for the Norddeutscher Rundfunk and outlines some of his companions who have made radio history for their part, especially his teacher Hermann Rockmann .

Kurt Grobecker also worked as a freelance editor and regularly wrote articles for, among others, the Hamburger Klönschnack and the magazine Hanse-Art.

Awards

  • 1974 Silver Award at the International Film & TV Festival of New York as an author for the Studio Hamburg film "Examination for Life", which documents the training of pilots at Deutsche Lufthansa in the early 1970s.
