Kurt Londenberg

Kurt Londenberg (born July 1, 1914 in Altona ; † February 17, 1995 in Hamburg ) was a German bookbinder , book designer and university professor .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a bookbinder in Düsseldorf, Londenberg studied from 1937 at the State Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Trade in Leipzig . There he became a student of Ignatz Wiemeler , whose catalog raisonné he later edited. After brief positions at the State University of Applied Arts in Dresden and the State Academy of Works in Kassel, he worked at the State Art School Hamburg from 1954, which later became the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (from 1955). Londenberg was initially a student of Richard von Sichowsky and was his successor as head of the binding class at the Hamburg State Art School. There he taught as a professor from 1955 to 1979. He was also a member of the board of the bibliophile association of the Maximilian Society until 1990 .

Londenberg is one of the best-known German binding artists of the post-war period, whose hand bindings are kept in various public libraries and museums as well as in private collections.
