features

The somewhat spindle-shaped, thick and heavy, transversely furrowed and striped snail shell of Chicoreus brevifrons , which in adult snails reaches a length of 15 cm, has a bulbous body, a high, conical thread and is covered with three rows of foliage-like folded, rather short rungs , between each of which there is a large hump. The case is white and often surrounded by red lines, but the color may vary. The case mouth is white.

distribution

The short thorn snail occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean from Florida to Venezuela and Brazil , in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Caribbean Sea .

habitat

The short-thorn snail lives in sheltered bays and lagoons on mud next to oyster colonies and in mangroves .

food

Chicoreus brevifrons particularly eats mussels and snails , the shell of which is either pierced with the radula under the action of acid or opened by applying pressure with the predator's foot. Preferred types of prey include oysters and ark clams .

Importance to humans

Chicoreus brevifrons , long known by Lamarck under the original name Murex brevifrons , is collected for its case, which is sold as jewelry. The meat is eaten raw or cooked.
