The Short crown screw or Bellied Black snail ( Holandriana holandrii ) is in South-Eastern Europe -based, up to 1.5 cm long freshwater snail , in fast-flowing rivers and streams lives and from microscopic algae fed.

features

The right-hand wound, egg-shaped, quite strong, unabelled housing is about 1.5 cm long and about 1.0 cm wide in the adult animal. It then has about four and a half to five convex circumferences and a pointed, but often worn apex. The egg-shaped case mouth is higher than it is wide. The spindle has a smooth, shiny edge with a flat bulge. The operculum is thin and horny. The basic color of the housing is yellowish to yellowish-green, with 2 to 4 black-brown bands often being seen on the last passages. The snail itself is usually patterned in black and light brown lines. As with other species of the family, the foot is elliptical and the bristle-like antennae are long, conical with short stems at the base on which the eyes sit, and in front of it the short proboscis with mouth.

Occurrence, way of life and distribution

The short crown snail lives in rivers and streams just below the water surface on solid substrates such as stone and wood in medium to strong water currents, where it feeds on algae growth . It occurs in western Hungary , Slovenia , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Montenegro , Serbia , Macedonia , Albania , Greece , Bulgaria and the southern outskirts of Austria ( Styria ). The stocks in southern Carinthia have disappeared due to the destruction of the habitat.
