Kymco stands for Kwang Yang Motor Corporation ( Chinese 光 陽 工業 , Pinyin Guāng Yáng Gōng Yè ) and is a Taiwanese manufacturer of scooters (50 to 700 cm³) as well as motorcycles and light motorcycles (50 to 250 cm³) like the Calypso 125 , the Grand Dink 125 , the Kymco Zing II , Hipster 125 or the Kymco Quannon .
The company was founded in 1963 and today employs over 4,000 people. Production takes place in three factories in Taiwan and overseas, in three factories in the People's Republic of China and one each in Indonesia and Vietnam . Kymco has sales offices around the world. According to its own information, 502,000 units were sold in 2005. In many countries, for example Japan or Austria , Kymco is the market leader in the 50 cm³ scooter class.
On January 1, 2016, 67,288 Kymco motorcycles were registered in Germany, which corresponds to a share of 1.6 percent.
Models
Since 2011, with the Downtown 300i ABS , the Kymco Super 8 and the Xciting 500 iR evo ABS , scooters with continuously variable V-belt automatic and anti-lock braking systems have also been offered in Germany. For the 2012 season, Kymco expanded its portfolio with the Myroad 700i, setting new standards in the luxury class. Kymco also offers a retro model, the Like, which has a striking similarity to the legendary Vespa LX . In addition to motorized two-wheelers, Kymco also produces sport and street quads (50–750 cm³) and builds a commercial vehicle (on a quad basis) as well as a range of multi-purpose engines and gasoline generators.
A special feature is the 50 cm³ four-stroke engine with electronic fuel injection NEWSento 50i, available since 2011 . It is the first and so far only engine from the Kymco for scooters of this class with electronic injection.
In October 2016, Kymco presented its new top model, the AK550, at the Intermot in Cologne, a two-cylinder that will be located in the upper class and above all to compete with Yamaha's X-Max and the Burgman from Suzuki. The AK550 (AK stands for Anyversary Kymco for the 50th company anniversary) and the new X-Town (125 and 300) are to be sold in Germany from spring 2017.

Cooperation with other manufacturers
Kymco manufactures the 450 cc single cylinder engines used in the BMW G 450 X by the German motorcycle manufacturer BMW .
The 2-cylinder in-line engines with 647 cm³ displacement (60 hp) of the BMW scooter BMW C 650 GT and BMW C 600 Sport also come from Kymco. This engine was also used in the BMW i3 with a lower output of 25 kW (34 hp) as a range extender.
The scooter models J300 and J125 from Kawasaki are identical to the Downtown models 300 and 125 and also run off the same line.
