Kwaya is a rural municipality in the department of Magaria in Niger .

geography

Kwaya is located in the greater Sudan landscape . The neighboring communities are Yaouri in the north-west, Bandé in the north-east, Magaria in the south-east, Yékoua in the south and Sassoumbroum in the south-west. The municipality is divided into 19 administrative villages, eight traditional villages, 17 hamlets and four camps. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Kwaya. The east of the municipality is covered by sand dunes. The valley of Wadi Korama runs through Kwaya, where water can be found at shallow depths.

history

The rural community of Kwaya emerged from the northern part of the canton of Magaria in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform.

population

At the 2001 census, Kwaya had 15,198 residents. For 2010, 20,635 inhabitants were calculated. Agricultural Hausa and Fulbe who specialize in agropastoralism live in Kwaya .

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture mainly includes millet and sorghum . Cabbage, sugar cane and onions are grown in the valley that runs through the rural community . However, this cannot meet the population's own needs. The few pastures, which are becoming increasingly smaller due to the overgrown sand mallow , are of poor quality due to overgrazing . There are beekeeping facilities in several villages. Around 60 percent of the workforce are regularly forced to migrate to work for seasonal reasons for economic reasons .
