history

Magaria in Stieler's Hand Atlas (1891)

Magaria was founded by Massabaki, a prince of the house state of Daura , and later fell under the rule of Zinder . In the middle of the 19th century Magaria was expanded as a fortress. The place and the surrounding villages came under British control at the beginning of the 20th century and were only added to France in 1906 . In the 1950s and 1960s, Magaria and the surrounding area were an important center for growing peanuts. Shortly before Niger's independence from France in 1960, the place was a stronghold of the left-wing party Sawaba of Djibo Bakary . In 1988 Magaria received the status of an independent municipality together with nine other Nigerien towns. By then there had been twelve parishes nationwide.

population

At the 1977 census, Magaria had 7,856 inhabitants, at the 1988 census 11,723 inhabitants, at the 2001 census 17,444 inhabitants and in 2019 19,419 inhabitants. For the year 2010, after an expansion of the municipality area, 103,019 inhabitants were calculated. The main ethnic groups in the city are Hausa , Fulbe , Kanuri and Tuareg . The Hausa mainly practice agriculture, the Fulbe specialize in agropastoralism .

Economy and Infrastructure

Magaria is located on National Road 11 , which is part of the international Algiers-Lagos Highway , as well as National Road 12 leading to Matamèye and National Road 13 leading to Dogo-Dogo . The area around the city is heavily used for agriculture due to the climatic conditions that are comparatively favorable for Niger. Magaria is located in the narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, which stretches from Tounouga in the west to Malawa in the east and is operated in the irrigation field economy for cash crops . At the Magaria market, sugar cane in particular is traded, which is sold as far as the capital Niamey . Magaria is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the 30 civil courts nationwide , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance).
