The grape of the Kypreiko grape variety

Kypreiko ( Greek κυπρέικο ) is a red wine variety . It is grown on the Greek islands of Crete , Cyprus and the Ionian island group belonging Kythira . In Cyprus in particular, the Mavro variety ( Greek μαύρος mavros 'black') is called and, together with the Xynisteri variety, is part of the well-known Commandaria dessert wine . Pierre Galet estimated the area under vines at the end of the 1990s to be almost 10,000 hectares . The share of the Kypreiko variety in the planted vineyards on the island of Cyprus was almost 58 percent in 2004 with 9,214 hectares.

The single-variety red wine of the variety is considered to be very strong.

The grape variety has probably been grown for several centuries. The Italian ampelographer Giuseppe di Rovasenda described it as Cipro Nero in his work Saggio di Ampelografia Universale in 1877 . It was often rumored in France that the grape variety came with the Crusaders from Cyprus to the Sud-Ouest growing region in the 12th century and was called Négrette there .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy with white wool. The yellowish, slightly blistered young leaves are still slightly woolly hairy on the leaf surface while they are hairy white woolly on the underside
  • The wedge-shaped, dark green leaves are five-lobed and indented to a medium depth (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is U-shaped open. The leaf margin is bluntly serrated. Compared to other grape varieties, the teeth are set medium wide. The leaf surface (also called blade) is slightly blistered.
  • The conical to conical grape is very large, long and dense. The weight of a grape can be up to 1 kg. The obovoid berries are large and reddish-purple in color.

The Kypreiko grape variety ripens around 30 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late for a grape variety. It is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It only has female flowers and is therefore not self-fruiting. In viticulture, there is the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yields.
