Léon d'Hervey de Saint-Denys
Marie Jean Léon le Coq, Baron d'Hervey, Marquis de Saint-Denys (born May 6, 1822 in Paris , † November 2, 1892 ibid) was a French writer, sinologist and dream researcher.
He was Professor of Chinese at the Collège de France and Commissioner for the Chinese Empire at the Paris World Exhibition in 1867 ( Legion of Honor ). He translated works by Li Bai from Chinese into French. These translations - translated into German by Hans Bethge - were incorporated into Gustav Mahler's Lied von der Erde .
He is known today for his private research in the field of lucid dreams . At the age of 13 he started writing down his dreams. After a while, he gained the ability to control his dreams and dream lucidly on a regular basis . In 1867 he published his findings anonymously in the book Les Rêves et les moyens de les diriger. In it he suggests various ways of controlling dreams. D'Hervey de Saint-Denys is considered a lucid dream pioneer. In the still young discipline of lucid dream research, most researchers (including Jayne Gackenbach , Stephen LaBerge , Paul Tholey ) include his work in their work. Sigmund Freud referred to d'Hervey's work The Interpretation of Dreams (1900 [1899]) to explain the relationship between the creation of dream images and the reaction of the dreaming ego to them (secondary processing).
