History and description

The Lion Bastion was laid out during the Nazi era in 1934 in connection with the construction of the Maschsee. The viewing platform was kept in the style of a bastion . The structure forms the end point of the quay wall running from the north bank of the Maschsee .

Originally, various crocodile figures by the sculptor Peter Schumacher were to be installed here. However, they were later set up in the garden at Lindemannallee 19 .

Instead of the crocodiles, two standing lions created by the sculptor Arno Breker were placed on the bastion in 1938, which then gave the building its name. The Brunswick lion provided the model for these sculptures . The two namesake of the Lion Bastion may seem threatening, but today they only guard an almost empty square.

The Lion Bastion is one of the scenes during the annual Maschsee Festival. Until 2017, the organizer Hannover Concerts was the operator of the events at the Löwenbastion, before event it AG gave the concert and party location a different orientation.
