The Lloyd 300 was a small car that the Lloyd Motoren Werke in Bremen, part of the Borgward Group, produced from 1950 to 1952. Until January 1951 the manufacturer operated as Lloyd Maschinenfabrik. The 300 in the model name stands for the (rounded) cubic capacity in cm³.

engine and gears

The Lloyd was powered by an air-cooled two-stroke two-cylinder engine (twin) with a displacement of 293 cm³, which was installed transversely in front of the front axle and developed 10 hp at 4000 rpm. The power was transmitted to the front wheels via a non-synchronized three-speed sliding gear . The top speed was approx. 70 km / h and the consumption was 5.5 l / 100 km ( two-stroke mixture 1:25).

Borgward had the engine-gearbox unit developed by the INKA (engineering and construction working group) design office in Hude (Oldenburg) , whose engineers came from the former Auto Union in Chemnitz . This made it unmistakable that the unit was similar to DKW's pre-war designs. The crutch switch on the dashboard was also reminiscent of DKW.

Frame and body

The four-seater body of the car was built on a central tube with cross members and a sheet steel base plate. It consisted of a wooden frame covered with plywood and bent sheet metal parts and was covered with artificial leather. A felt covering under the synthetic leather leveled out any unevenness. The similarity of the artificial leather with the material of an adhesive plaster led to the joking name Leukoplastbomber .

Doors hinged at the back made it relatively easy to get in and out. Sliding windows, which, in contrast to crank windows, do not need a mechanism in the doors, benefited the interior width (and the price) of the very narrow car. The hood of the first version was unusually small and was replaced by a wider one in late 1951. The trunk could only be used from the inside.

landing gear

The car had independent suspension on two transverse leaf springs at the front and a pendulum axle with longitudinal semi-elliptical springs at the rear. From January 1952 shock absorbers were available on request at a surcharge of 70.00 DM . The brakes were operated by cables.

production

Production of the LP 300 began in May 1950 as a sedan (LP). From the spring of 1951 a station wagon (LS), box (LK) and coupé variant (LC) was also offered. A total of around 18,500 vehicles were produced. At the beginning of the construction period, the sedan cost DM 3,334.00.
