history

The postcard shows the facilities of today's LWL facilities in Lippstadt- Eickelborn and - Benninghausen

A farmhouse and workhouse in (Lippstadt-) Benninghausen became the nucleus of the psychiatric facilities in Benninghausen and Eickelborn in 1821 . This facility found its place in a former Cistercian monastery, which was nationalized in 1804 in the course of secularization . At the 26th Westphalian Provincial Parliament, an undersupply in the field of care for the mentally ill was determined. The establishment of a second Provincial Care Institution was then approved on March 31, 1882. On October 15, 1882, this further nursing home was officially opened on the site of the former Eickelborn manor .

The number of patients who lived in Benninghausen and Eickelborn increased steadily. In 1913, around 1020 people were housed in Eickelborn alone.

In the years 1940 to 1943, 744 patients were transferred from the Eickelborn Provincial Sanatorium to other institutions in the course of euthanasia , of which 598 were killed. The memorial “The Bound” at the LWL headquarters in Lippstadt-Eickelborn is a reminder of this darkest chapter in the history of psychiatry.

In the post-war period, the hospital operations in the sanatoriums in Benninghausen and Eickelborn were expanded. The psychiatry reform set new standards in the 1970s with the pursuit of dehospitalization and decentralization.

The Westphalian State Hospital Lippstadt and the Westphalian Center for Forensic Psychiatry Lippstadt emerged from the Westfälisches Landeskrankenhaus Eickelborn in 1984, and from then on exist side by side. Each of the independent facilities was able to further develop its specific treatment offer, which ultimately resulted in the complete spatial separation of two locations, Eickelborn and Benninghausen.

In 1997, the psychiatric hospital was separated from acute and long-term care: the Westphalian Clinic for Psychiatry Lippstadt (today LWL-Klinik Lippstadt) and the Westphalian Nursing and Support Center Lippstadt (today LWL care center and LWL residential association Lippstadt) were created. There has been a cooperation with the LWL-Klinik Warstein since 2001.

After the renovation work completed in 2006, the LWL Clinic for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics is now fully located at the Benninghausen location.

The landscape assembly decided in February 2007 to rename the facilities of the regional association Westphalia-Lippe (LWL) so that the sponsor stands out as the umbrella brand of the facilities: The Westphalian Clinic Lippstadt became the LWL Clinic Lippstadt.

In the course of the last few years, a changed demand situation in the psychiatric care landscape has emerged: The proportion of depressed patients rose, with the proportion of older depressed people growing in particular. With this in mind, Department D was developed and launched on July 1, 2012.

Since the winter of 2015, the LWL health facilities in the Soest district at the Lippstadt site have been providing the city of Lippstadt with buildings that are currently not in use to deal with the refugee crisis .

Treatment concepts

All essential psychiatric treatment methods, i.e. medical, nursing, psychological, socio-, ergo-, physio- and creative therapeutic procedures are used in the clinic. We treat people of all age groups from the age of 18 with different clinical pictures. The clinic sees itself as a technically modern service company for mentally ill people who experience individual therapy here according to today's standards of science.

Departments

General psychiatry

The general psychiatry department works according to the principle of internal differentiation. The wards, three of which are open and one closed, differ in their therapeutic focus. These lie in the treatment of psychotic disorders , developmental and behavioral disorders as well as the treatment of psychiatric emergencies and crisis intervention . The therapy program is geared towards the focus. The treatment is divided into admission, treatment and discharge phases. In the admission phase, the focus is on diagnostics, relieving the patient and planning the treatment. In the therapy phase, the patients are integrated into the complete program in order to be prepared for the time after their stay in the discharge phase. The cooperation of relatives in the treatment is an important part of the therapy concept and thus promotes self-help. The aim of treatment is not only to overcome the disease, but also to ensure active disease management and adequate and satisfactory social integration.

Depression treatment

In terms of content, people of all ages who are depressed are treated. Of the two wards, one specializes in the therapy of younger depressed people (approx. Up to 50 years of age), while the other focuses on the treatment of depressed people over the age of 50. Older, depressed patients show that they often also suffer from psychosomatic illnesses, in particular chronic pain disorders, so that the ward developed an additional specialization and from this a close cooperation with the pain therapists of the KlinikumStadtSoest was established. In the foreground of the treatment is primarily the solution orientation, using the individual skills. Patients develop coping strategies and actively use them. During the treatment, based on a basic therapy program, the topics and stress areas are defined in relation to the patient, solution strategies are developed and, finally, the discharge is planned sufficiently long-term in order to achieve a sustainable improvement and stabilization of the state of health. In the end, the patients should be able to implement what they have achieved in therapy at home in order to stay healthy in the long term.

Integrative Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (IPP)

The department's focus is on outpatient and day-care offers. For this purpose, a day clinic and an institute outpatient clinic in the areas of general psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and addiction medicine are provided in the center of Lippstadt. Another day clinic is located in Soest at the Marienkrankenhaus. The treatment aims to restore psychological stability and to promote practical, social and cognitive skills. In the day clinics, all mental illnesses are treated except for primary addictions. Day clinic treatment is always considered when outpatient therapy is not sufficient but full inpatient treatment is not necessary. The treatment takes place from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In the remaining time, the patients live as usual in their normal environment. In this way, they maintain their social connections and can directly try out what they have learned in practice. It mainly treats depression and anxiety disorders, but also obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders and psychoses.

Gerontopsychiatry

In the Geriatric Psychiatry Department, with the exception of depression, all mental illnesses of older age (from 60 years of age) are treated with specialized therapies. This applies in particular to the various dementias and the associated disorders of behavior and experience, but also to affective disorders such as v. a. Psychosis and addiction disorders when they occur in connection with mood disorders. The department has several open and closed wards. The primary goal of treatment is a regression of the symptoms of the disease. But acceptance of and dealing with chronic illnesses also play a role. Overall, the aim is to integrate modern, neuroscientific, psychotherapeutic and socio-psychiatric approaches with the involvement of the social environment.

Addiction medicine

The focus of the treatment offer is the qualified withdrawal from alcohol, medication and illegal drugs (cannabis, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, LSD, amphetamines etc.). The two stations at the Lippstadt site each have their own treatment focus for different subgroups of the addiction disease. In all stations, women and men are treated together. One station is open, the other is exit-controlled.

In addition to (drug) treatment, the aim is to encourage motivation for long-term abstinence and to present and organize appropriate support options. Individual and group discussions, social counseling, information transfer, sports and exercise therapy, occupational therapy and other treatment modules are available.

Education, job and further education

As a teaching facility for clinical psychology / psychotherapy, the LWL-Klinik Lippstadt cooperates with the Institute for Psychology at the University of Bochum as part of the training to become a psychological psychotherapist. The LWL-Klinik is also recognized by the Medical Association of Westphalia-Lippe as a training center for specialist training in " Psychiatry and Psychotherapy ". Affiliated to the clinic is the LWL Academy for Health and Nursing Professions in Lippstadt with more than 120 training positions in health and nursing. Together with the LWL-Klinik Warstein , the Lippstadt Clinic maintains the advanced training center of the LWL-Kliniken in the Soest district at the Warstein location. The advanced training courses offered there are also available to external participants.
