La Maison des Lumières Denis Diderot (MLDD) is a museum in the French city ​​of Langres . It is dedicated to the writer , philosopher , enlightener and co-editor of the Encyclopédie Denis Diderot , who was born there on October 5, 1713 . Opened on Diderot's 300th birthday on October 5, 2013, the museum, supported by the city of Langres, has the status of a Musée de France .

Langres is located in the Haute-Marne in the region Grand Est belonging Champagne . The museum is unique of its kind in France. Its curator (as of 2014) is Olivier Caumont (* 1966).

A total of 250 objects are presented on the 400  m 2 exhibition area with its ten exhibition rooms. There is also a café, a “philosophical laboratory” and various exhibits in the museum garden. The visitors are invited to approach the subject of the French Enlightenment . A total of four main themes are presented on the four levels of the museum: the history of the exhibition venue, the young Denis Diderot and his move to Paris, the life and works of Denis Diderot and the encyclopedia as the work of the Enlightenment. In addition, his other literary works are described.

In the ten exhibition rooms , personal items by Diderot, but also original manuscripts and letters as well as printing forms for the production of the encyclopedia, drawings and scientific objects are on display. Information boards, films and interactive stations attempt to give an insight into the thinking of Denis Diderot and his contemporaries. In doing so, the exhibition seeks to provide an overview of the Age of Enlightenment and the way in which the people of the 18th century changed their view of the world, society and their place in it.

history

The museum is located in the center of Langres at 1, place Pierre Burelle in the Hôtel du Breuil de Saint-Germain . The Valtier de Choiseul house , also Breuil des Saint-Germain, is a historic building from the end of the 16th century.

In 1576, Sébastien Valtier de Choiseul bought a large parcel and built a mansion there. Around 1770, Philippe Profilet de Dardenay rebuilt the vertical wing of the manor house and provided it with a facade that corresponded to the proportions of the Renaissance. At the same time, a protective wall and a portal were built on the house. In the 19th century, the Du Breuil de Saint-Germain family added the dormer windows that came from other Renaissance buildings.

The inauguration ceremony took place on Saturday 5th October 2013 under the patronage of Mayor Didier Loiseau (* 1952), who has been in office since 2008, maire de Langres - a gastroenterologist , gastroenterologist and member of the Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP) . The opening of the museum was flanked by a large number of cultural events in honor of Denis Diderot. But private sponsors such as the Société Plastic Omnium also contributed funds.

The five thousandth visitor was registered just seven weeks after the opening. The museum cost more than five million euros and was 80 percent financed by public funds.

Exhibits, tour

The La Maison des Lumières or his museum design was supervised by Atelier à Kiko and the museum garden by landscape architect Louis Bénech (* 1957) designed. The structural measures and the consideration of the monument preservation part were taken over by the architectural office Pierre Bortolussi. The project was supported by various institutions, such as the French regional councils such as the Conseil Régional de Champagne-Ardenne here Jean-Paul Bachy (* 1947) and the Conseil général de la Haute-Marne here Bruno Sido (* 1951) and the Arts Vivants 52 , the Directions régionales des affaires culturelles (DRAC) and the Ministères de la Culture de la Communication , the Ministère de l'éducation nationale and the European Union .

  • Exhibition room 10: Current exhibitions on the subject of the Enlightenment.

Museum dates

The opening times are from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. from April to September. In October to March also from Tuesday to Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon, but only from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at noon. The admission price is, not reduced, five euros and concessions three euros, admission is free for children under the age of twelve. The explanations of the exhibits are not multilingual, but an audio guide can be used. This audio guide provides information in the sense of Diderot et sa ville in German, English, French or Dutch (as of 2013). To do this, the corresponding digits that are assigned to some exhibits or rooms must be entered into the audio guide's keyboard.

Accessibility

Both the access to the museum and the tour are barrier-free . Elevators enable access to the entrance area as well as to the individual floors. Within the exhibition area, wheelchair users , for example, can move more or less freely via ramps. Admission to the museum is free of charge for severely disabled people from the EU and their companions, with appropriate proof.
