La Perouse Pinnacle is a small, uninhabited rock island in the Pacific Ocean , which geographically belongs to the Northwest Hawai'i Islands and politically to the US state of Hawaii . The island is named after the French explorer Jean-François de La Pérouse .
geography
La Perouse Pinnacle is located in the center of the French Frigate Shoals , the largest atoll in the Hawai'i Islands in terms of diameter . The basalt rock rising steeply from the lagoon represents the now almost completely submerged remnant of the former central volcano . The island has an area of 3677 m² (0.0037 km²) and reaches a height of 36 m above sea level. A 1971 publication gives a length of 229 meters in a northwest-southeast direction, and a maximum width of 50 meters.
Since the other motus of the atoll are of coralline origin, La Perouse Pinnacle is a special habitat for animals and plants, especially for algae . The rock is overgrown with some moss and grass .
