Dammed lake in an oxbow lake |
The Laascher See is a still water in the municipality of Höhbeck in the district of Lüchow-Dannenberg in Lower Saxony . The approximately 3.1 km long and maximum 150 m wide lake is located southwest of Brünkendorf and north of the L 256 state road . The outflow at the north-western end of the lake is via the Seege , a left tributary of the Elbe .
Its narrow, very elongated shape indicates that it is part of an earlier course of the Elbe, i.e. an oxbow river . What is striking is a sharp, almost 90 degree bend in the middle, where the Seege flowing through the lake changes its course from (south) west to north-west, and then flows into today's main stream of the Elbe just behind Lake Laasch. As part of the Elbe valley floodplain, the lowland area of the Laascher See is regularly flooded over a large area when the Elbe floods. It is an important nature and bird sanctuary that is part of the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve .
