Way of life
The Labeo calbasu, which is mostly close to the ground, feeds on aquatic plants, crustaceans , insect larvae , algae and diatoms . Its food composition was examined in an Indian body of water, which consisted of 10% algae, 10% higher plants, 48% protozoa , 12% crustaceans, 10% molluscs and 15% filtered mud and sand. In the ecosystem of the Southeast Asian waters, it plays an important role in the removal of organic waste on the water floor. The female can lay up to 200,000 fish eggs.
use
Labeo calbasu is kept in polyculture in Indian pond farms with food fish such as Catla catla , Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala . Its liver is high in vitamin A , making it a popular food fish that is in high demand. It is also a popular sport fish in many bodies of water and is used in some ponds as a detritus eater to dispose of waste. In the Barnai River it is still relatively common, in other waters its stock has been classified as endangered by the IUCN Red List, so that overfishing has been partially regulated by state supervisory authorities.
