Lachania ( Greek Λαχανιά ( f. Sg. )) Is an over hills and a river valley scattered village in the south of the Dodecanese belonging to the Greek island of Rhodes . The village forms with the uninhabited hamlet Plimmyri and the uninhabited island of China the local community Lachania ( Topiki Kinotita Lachanias Τοπική Gemeοινότητα Λαχανιάς) in the municipality of Notia Rodos of the municipality of Rhodes. About ten kilometers north is Gennadi , the city of Rhodes is 73 km away. The village with a two thousand year history is counted among the most beautiful in Rhodes because of its authentic architecture with renovated crouched white houses and has 153 permanent residents (2011).

In the mid-1980s, the almost depopulated Lachania experienced a renaissance due to foreign investors and dropouts, including writers, painters, musicians and sculptors. Many houses in the village - like the two windmills - have been restored. The church of Agios Georgios (" St. Georg ") , built in 1760 on the remains of an early Christian church, contains a cross-shaped baptismal font from the 6th century made from a monolithic stone block. In the vicinity of the church there are remains of a Turkish irrigation system with a spring shaded by a 300-year-old plane tree . In the vicinity of the place there are several churches, of which Agia Irini (" St. Irene ") dates from the 15th century.

The political cartoonist Vangelis Pavlidis lives in Lachania. The Dutch musician Jerry Rix died there in 2016.

etymology

The name Lachania is derived from the Greek word for cabbage ( lachano λάχανο), which is still grown today on the fertile soil around the place.
