Ladislau Biernaski

Ladislau Biernaski CM (born October 24, 1937 in Almirante Tamandaré , Paraná ; † February 13, 2012 in Pinhais , Paraná) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of São José dos Pinhais .

Life

Ladislau Biernaski, Brazilian with Polish roots, joined the religious order of the Lazarists and studied philosophy in 1958/59 and theology from 1959 to 1963 at the Franciscan seminary Colégio Bom Jesus . After being ordained a priest on July 6, 1963, he studied philosophy at the Institut Catholique de Paris from 1963 to 1965 .

He taught at the Saint Vincent de São Paulo seminary and was its rector from 1965 to 1968. In 1968 he moved to the Minor Seminary in Araucaria as superior. In 1975 he became provincial of his order in Paraná. In 1976 he became professor of philosophy in Paraná.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Tetci and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Curitiba on April 19, 1979 . It was introduced on July 5, 1979 in the office after him Pope John Paul II personally on 27 May 1979. St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination had donated; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy , Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , and Eduardo Martínez Somalo , Substitute of the State Secretariat . As a motto he chose Ele é a Nossa Paz .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on December 6, 2006 as the first bishop of the newly founded diocese of São José dos Pinhais .

Ladislau Biernaski became Vice-President in 1997, and from 2003 President of the Commission for National Pastoral Care (Comissão Pastoral da Terra) and member of the Permanent Council of the National Confederation of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB). He was secretary of the CNBB, South Region, and its president in 1977/79 and was involved in numerous pastoral and social movements.

He died of complications from cancer.
