Ladislaus Varady

Ladislaus (Lászlo) Varady (born  November 27, 1906 in Budapest ; †  June 21, 1989 in Vienna ) was a Hungarian conductor and composer who later worked as a professor at the Vienna Conservatory .

Life

Varady attended the Humanistic Gymnasium in Budapest. He then completed violin and composition studies at the University of Music in Budapest . At the age of 18, he began as a répétiteur , then director of studies and finally second conductor at the Leipzig Opera House . In the following years Varady was first conductor at the Düsseldorf Opera House and worked as an assistant to Wilhelm Furtwängler in Berlin . Until the outbreak of the Second World War , Varady worked as an opera and concert conductor in Paris , Brussels , Prague , Vienna and Budapest. Between 1940 and 1944 he was drafted several times for several months for the Reich Labor Service . Ladislaus Varady was imprisoned in Mauthausen concentration camp in 1944 until it was liberated by the Americans in May 1945.

After the war he was given responsibility for the organization and direction of the orchestra and the State Opera in Szeged . From 1949 Varady was commissioned to organize the State Singspiel and Operetta Theater in Budapest, the musical direction of the state film production and was a guest conductor at the Budapest State Opera. He also worked for the Hungarian radio and made several records.

In 1957 Varady emigrated to Vienna and took on a teaching position at the Vienna Conservatory as a professor. In addition to his work as a concert conductor, among others with the Lower Austria Tonkünstler and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra , Varady founded and directed the Vienna Baroque Orchestra. He also worked for Austrian television and radio.

Compositions

The War of Love - comic opera in three acts based on the screenplay of The Wise Women (La Kermesse héroïque, 1935) by Charles Spaak and melodies by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry .
