Lafoes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lafões is a region and a former district ( concelho ) in the Região Centro , in central Portugal .

The district was created in the course of the consolidation of the independent Kingdom of Portugal (1140) and received city rights ( Foral ) by King Manuel I in 1514 . Its seat was divided between the localities of Vouzela and São Pedro do Sul . It was named after Lafões Monastery, founded in 1123 .

The circle, which has existed unchanged since 1695 , was dissolved in the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 in 1834 and split into the circles Oliveira de Frades , Vouzela and São Pedro do Sul.

As a regional historical reference point, the term has survived to this day, for example in various place names, and especially in the statistical sub-region Dão-Lafões .
