The Đakovo or Djakovo concentration camp cemetery is a memorial to the victims of the Đakovo concentration camp . The concentration camp was located in the city of Đakovo in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) during World War II . In the cemetery 569 victims are Croatian - fascist Ustasha buried, mostly Jewish and Serbian women and children. Several thousand women and children were interned in the Đakovo concentration camp between December 1941 and July 1942 from assembly points in Sarajevo and other places in Bosnia , Herzegovina and Slavonia . There was serious illness and hunger, as well as torture , ill-treatment , rape and murder of women and children. It is the only cemetery of a concentration camp among many in Croatia .

history

The gravedigger Stephan Kolb (1886–1945) was responsible for the burial , documentation and recording of the victims. According to Kolb's notes, who worked there from 1910 to 1945, Mazlata Katan was the first victim to be buried in the cemetery. She came from Sarajevo and was buried on December 9, 1941. Katan was 65 years old. Over time, however, the cemetery has been neglected. Also it came to the grave desecration local vandals. In the last few years, the cemetery, which is now a memorial site, has been restored . Finally, many tombstones were renewed, some of which were donated by Yad Vashem in collaboration with Leah Maestro from Sarajevo. At the time, Maestro was head of a research and restoration project related to the cemetery and the victims of the concentration camp. The restoration was supported by the Jewish Historical Museum Belgrade from Serbia , the members of the Jewish communities of the former Yugoslavia and the Jewish community of Sarajevo.
