The Lagotellerie Island ( French Ile Lagotellerie ) is a 2 km long island in the Marguerite Bay off the west coast of Graham Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 3.25 km west of the south end of Horseshoe Island . The Lagotellerie Island has an area of 1.58 km².
Their terrain is steep and rocky. Two elevations, each 268 m high, are connected by a wide saddle 200 m high. About 13% of the island, especially in the south, is permanently covered by ice.
The island has a diverse flora and fauna for its location. 3.7% of their area, particularly flat rock terraces at 30 to 50 m above sea level, are covered by green vegetation. Among other things, the two only vascular plants native to the Antarctic can be found here , the Antarctic Schmiele and the Antarctic Perlwort . They cover contiguous areas of up to 10 m² in size. The loamy soil that developed under these mats and their invertebrate fauna is likely unique in these latitudes. In addition, 20 types of moss, 2 types of liverwort and 60 types of lichens have been detected so far . One of the southernmost populations of the wingless mosquito species Belgica antarctica can be found on the island . In the southeast of the island there is a colony of around 2000 Adelie penguins and one of the southernmost colonies of the blue-eyed shag . In 2011 about 200 fur seals were sighted on the north coast and in the penguin colony, as well as 20 Weddell seals . The fossil-bearing rocks exposed in the east are of geological value and probably come from the Jura . Since 1985 the Lagotellerie Island has been under the protection of the Antarctic Treaty , since 2002 as a specially protected area ASPA-115.
Participants in the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908–1910), led by polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot, discovered and mapped the island. Charcot named it after Baron Maurice de Lagotellerie (1874–1928), a banker from Paris and sponsor of his research trip .
