The Antarctic Schmiele ( Deschampsia antarctica ) is a species of plant within the sweet grass family (Poaceae). In addition to the Antarctic pearlwort ( Colobanthus quitensis ), it is the only native seed plant species in the Antarctic .
description
The Antarctic Schmiele is a perennial plant with a cushion-shaped growth. It reaches heights of between 10 and 30 centimeters. The truncated ligule is 4 to 8 millimeters long. The leaf blades are narrow, rolled and about 2.5 to 3 millimeters wide.
The inflorescence is a loose panicle 5 to 20 centimeters long . The stalked, two- to three-flowered, 5 to 7 millimeter long spikelets stand individually on the hairy panicle branches . The fruit is a 1 to 1.2 millimeter long, dark brown caryopsis .
distribution
The Antarctic Schmiele grows in the extreme south of South America in Argentina and Chile , on the Antarctic as well as on the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic islands: Crozet Islands , Falkland Islands , Heard and McDonald Islands , Kerguelen , South Georgia and southern Sandwich Islands .
