Lajos Fülep
Lajos Fülep (born January 23, 1885 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary ; died October 7, 1970 in Budapest) was a Hungarian art historian .
Life
Fülep studied theology and art history, from 1904 he stayed in Paris and from 1907 in Florence, where he also studied with Benedetto Croce , and in Rome. When the First World War broke out, he returned to Budapest. There he became a participant in the Budapest “Sunday Circle”, which was led by György Lukács in Béla Balázs ' house . At the "Freie Schule der Geisteswissenschaften" he gave lectures on the national element in art. A close working relationship developed here between Fülep and Charles de Tolnay .
He wrote for various newspapers, including Népszava , and was editor of the philosophical journal A Szellem with Lukács . After the end of the war he became diplomatically active in Italy on behalf of the Károlyi government , where he was the editor of the newspaper L'Ungheria . In the Hungarian Soviet Republic he was appointed university professor, but removed from office after it was overthrown. Fülep was forced into internal emigration and looked for a job as a pastor in various Reformed congregations in southern Hungary: Medina, Dombóvár , Baja and, for the longest, from 1927 to 1947 in Zengővárkony . In the rural communities he collected objects of folk art. He received a teaching position at the University of Pécs and cultivated a friendship with Karl Kerényi, who was appointed professor there in 1934 . His research spanned an arc from Rembrandt and Leonardo to Cézanne and to the contemporary Hungarian painters Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry and Gyula Derkovits . The authoritarian Hungarian regime under Miklós Horthy made him increasingly discouraged.
After the Second World War, he was appointed professor of art history at the Péter Pázmány University in Budapest under the communist government in 1948 and a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .
Fülep had received the Baumgarten Prize in 1930 and was honored with the Kossuth Prize in 1957 .
The municipality of Zengővárkony commemorates his stay with a small museum.
