Laleh Bakhtiar

Laleh Bakhtiar ( Persian لاله بختیار; born July 29, 1938 in Tehran ) is an Iranian - American Muslim writer, translator, and psychologist.

biography

Laleh Bakhtiar was born in Tehran to Abolghassem Bakhtiar and Helen Jeffreys. She grew up as a Catholic in the USA, but converted after meeting the Persian philosopher Seyyed Hossein Nasr (born in Tehran in 1933, later Professor of Islamic Studies at George Washington University ), whom she met as an adult in Tehran , to Islam . It was also Nasr who influenced her view of Islamic mysticism and philosophy . She received her PhD from Chatham College , Pennsylvania . She is the author of more than 25 books on Islam and its mysticism , Sufism . She is the first woman to translate the Koran into English . Her work aims to create understanding and tolerance between Muslims and non-Muslims. Bakhtiar has lived in Chicago for several years. She offers courses in Sufi psychology for the general public and advocates the rights of Muslim women. Among other things, she translated the text Fatima is Fatima by Ali Schariati into English.
