Iranian Embassy (Bonn)
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Federal Republic of Germany ( Imperial Iranian Embassy until 1979 ) was based in the Bad Godesberg district of Bonn from 1973/74 to 2000 . The former office building of the embassy , built in 1975, is located in the Friesdorf district on the west side of Godesberger Allee ( Bundesstrasse 9 ) with the address Godesberger Allee 133-137. It is still owned by Iran.
history
After recording of diplomatic relations with Germany in June 1951, Iran in 1952 opened an embassy at the government headquarters in Bonn. The Office of the embassy initially was located in the Cologne district Rodenkirchen in Villa banks Straße 29 . It was relocated to Hebbelstrasse 6 (today Ringelnatzstrasse) within Rodenkirchen by 1954, while the residence - the ambassador's residence - remained at its previous location. In June 1955 the legation was converted into an embassy. The office and residence of the Imperial Iranian Embassy were moved to Villa Parkstrasse 5 in the Marienburg district of Cologne in 1958 , where there was also a consular department . The military department of the embassy as the office of the military attachés was initially located in the Neustadt-Nord district ( Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring 15 ), then moved within the district to the Concordia House (Hohenzollernring 2–10) and was finally in the Bayenthal district ( Bonner Strasse 180), where the Iranian intelligence service SAVAK maintained its central office for Europe from mid-1964 . In 1973/74 the Imperial Iranian Embassy including the consular department moved to Bonn to the main focus of the diplomatic missions in the Bad Godesberg district, where the office was initially set up in a rented office building ( Hochkreuzallee 1 ). In 1975, Iran also acquired an office building (Kölner Straße 133-137, since 1978 Godesberger Allee) in Bad Godesberg, which was built in the same year according to plans by the local architect Dirk Denninger , for five million DM from the Westphalia-Lippe Dental Association and converted it into an embassy building. whereby the pre-blinded metal frame was replaced by window frames painted in a bright oriental style. The embassy residence, the ambassador's residence, remained in Cologne-Marienburg until at least 1978, after which it was moved to Bad Godesberg to a property in the Muffendorf district (Elfstrasse 40) with a 10,500 m² property.
After the Islamic Revolution (1979), 105 Iranians stormed the embassy building on August 3, 1981 and temporarily occupied it to protest against the new regime. The embassy building was re-occupied on April 5, 1992 by 30 to 40 members of the People's Mujahedin following the news of Iranian air strikes on opposition bases in Iraq; At least five people were injured and parts of the interior were destroyed. At that time, the embassy in Bonn was one of the largest diplomatic representations in Iran with around 90 employees. It was considered the European headquarters of the Iranian intelligence service with residencies of three individual services, which, according to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution , occupied the specially secured third floor of the building with six offices and a radio room with 20 employees of the MOIS (also VEVAK) and their task the observation and investigation of the Iranian opposition is said to have been. From the Bonn residency of the MOIS, among other things, the Mykonos attack in Berlin (1992) should have been controlled. The cultural department of the embassy was last located outside the office building in the district of Brüser Berg (Borsigallee 4).
In the course of the relocation of the seat of government to Berlin (1999), the Iranian embassy moved there in 2000 (→ Iranian embassy in Berlin ). Both the former office building and the former residence of the embassy in the Muffendorf district have been vacant since then. Iran offered both properties for sale through changing brokers, most recently by way of an advertisement for sale in August 2013, whereby the high asking price allegedly stood in the way of a successful conclusion of negotiations, at least for the former office building. It was not adequately maintained until the end, so that its structural condition deteriorated increasingly. During elections in Iran, the property serves as a polling station for Iranians living in Germany. On March 8, 2018, the building was occupied by activists who support the Iranian women's movement. After Iran filed criminal charges against the squatters, police evacuated the building on March 15.
