Lambert Orkis (* 1946 in Philadelphia , PA) is an American pianist and university professor .

Life

The versatile artist appears primarily as an accompanist for other instrumentalists and as a chamber musician , but also as a soloist . He plays both historical instruments and modern grand pianos . Its spectrum ranges from classical repertoire to contemporary music . He is a professor at Boyer College, Temple University in Philadelphia .

Orkis has worked as a chamber musician with the cellists Anner Bylsma , Lynn Harrell and Daniel Müller-Schott as well as with the violinists Jaap Schröder and Julian Rachlin . He accompanied the cellist Mstislaw Rostropovich for eleven years at all relevant concert appearances. As chief conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington , Rostropovich created the position of “ principal keyboard instrumentalist” especially for Orkis. Orkis has also given concerts with orchestras under Christoph Eschenbach , Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and other conductors.

Since 1988 Orkis has been the piano accompanist of the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter at her concerts with a chamber music repertoire (mainly violin sonatas by Beethoven , Mozart , Brahms and Schubert ). For the complete recordings of the violin sonatas by Beethoven and Mozart, which were published by Deutsche Grammophon , the two interpreters received a Grammy and the French Choc de l'année Prize .

The composers George Crumb , Richard Wernick and James Primrosch created works especially for Lambert Orkis.
